South East Caucus Asks President To Pardon Nnamdi Kanu

The Southeast Caucus of the House of Representatives has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to use his constitutional powers to grant pardon to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, following his recent conviction.

Addressing journalists in Abuja, Hon. IdumaIgariwey and 43 other members of the caucus said the Caucus respects the judiciary and the legal processes that led to the conviction. However, he emphasized that the matter has grown into a national concern with serious humanitarian, economic, and security implications for the Southeast and the country at large.

The Caucus argued that Kanu’s continued detention has heightened tensions in the region, disrupted social and economic activities, and affected families and communities emotionally.

They stressed that a presidential act of clemency could ease these burdens, restore calm, and reduce the cycle of civil unrest and security operations.

They said granting pardon to Kanu would not only demonstrate national inclusiveness and leadership but also open avenues for dialogue between the Federal Government, elected officials, and community stakeholders to secure long-term peace in the Southeast.
